Quick Baby Shower Guide

Who might throw the baby shower?

Usually someone other than the expecting couple — though this is up to debate. Formally, your baby shower is supposed to be thrown by a non-relative.

Our advice? Ignore traditional rules. Having someone close or related is always a great choice.

When is the best time to hold a shower?

Most baby showers happen before the baby is born. Though you probably want to consider having it towards the end of the pregnancy, anytime after you know you’re going to have the baby is fine. Another interesting point is that if the mother is not “showing”, a shower can feel a bit strange (better to wait for the bump in that case).

Always consult with the couple though. They may be able to warn you about scheduling conflicts. Also, you will need to take guests into consideration. You don’t want to send out the custom invitations and then finding out important guests can’t come.

Scheduling the baby shower after the birth is another option. Then guests can bring gifts specific to the baby’s sex. The baby can also then serve as a focal point of the shower since women love to shower affection on them.

Who should you invite to the shower?

If you’re hosting the shower, you may have some ideas about the guest list. Don’t be too pushy though. Consult with the important people at the event first.

What about hosting a shower for the expectant mom and dad? Though mommy showers are more common, showers with dads too are becoming more popular. It really depends on the theme and atmosphere you are looking for.

If the shower is for a second or subsequent baby (these babies deserve a celebration, too!), the guest list is usually made up of close friends and family and anyone who was, for whatever reason, not invited to the first shower.

When should I mail out the invitations and stationery?

You want to send custom invitations out at least a few weeks ahead of the event (if not more): This allows them enough time to work the shower into their schedules and shop for the perfect gift.
