New and Unusual Baby Facts

Friday, August 6th, 2010

It is a widely understood fact that babies are adorable. They wear goofy clothes that are somehow still cute. There is no other stage of life when a person can wear loudly patterned clothing without having to deal with snide comments. You might think that it’s not that hard being a baby. The majority of the population seems to think that babies are fully formed adults except for their inability to speak in complete sentences. Babies are actually quite complex creatures who have very specific needs. Here are some things about babies that you might not have known already.

Babies are sensitive to light before they are born. Your eyes are incredibly complicated devices. A lot of coordination goes into making sure your eyes work the way they are supposed to. It only takes a few months from conception to form working eyes. Your baby will be sensitive to light changes by the time your pregnancy is six months along. A great piece of eye trivia: your baby’s eyes might change color a few months after she is born-Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes and it takes a few months for the eyes to change to their permanent color. The blue color in your baby’s eyes will probably change if you are Caucasian. So don’t get excited if your baby has blue eyes at birth. That color will probably change.

Some babies already have teeth when they are born-did you know that already? Other babies have to wait longer than usual and won’t see any teething until they are almost toddlers.

No parent looks forward to having their baby start teething. Don’t worry too much about when your child’s first teeth will start to appear. Each baby is different and develops at his or her own pace so, even though you might have had three kids who started teething at six months, that doesn’t mean that your newest baby will start at that time.

Until recently even doctors believed that babies didn’t smile until a while after they had been born. Many people attribute a smiling mouth shape to gas if the baby is below a certain age. For decades most people believed that babies had to learn how to smile-that it was a condition picked up by the infant early in life. Disapproval and unhappiness were thought to be easier for a baby to express than happiness. Now we know better. Smiling has been picked up by newer ultrasound machines, proving the old theories are wrong. Doctors are now able to give parents pictures of their children’s’ smiles weeks before the children are due to be born. Common belief now is that the birthing process is so traumatic for infants that they do not smile until they have gotten over the shocking change in environments.

You will be astounded by all of the things that you can learn about babies. Sure you probably already know that babies develop really quickly. Do you understand the minutiae of how a baby grows up? Have you learned about all of the amazing milestones between early childhood and being all grown up? There is no end to the number of interesting facts you can learn about babies-this article is a good example of that!
