I’m Four Weeks Pregnant

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

On your week four of pregnancy, your baby can now be called an embryo. Simply consists of two layers of cells called the hypoblasts and the epiblasts. These cell layers will soon develop and become your baby’s organs and body parts. This is the most crucial time of development for the baby’s organs and the baby is very vulnerable at this time. Some of the organs will begin functioning as it also starts to develop.

What is happening in your body at week four of pregnancy is called the “luteal phase”. Very high in progesterone and other hormones, tendering breasts and nipples is part of the experience. It will also continue to intensify. Weight gain is not yet visible because the baby is still small but hormones will be acting crazy and mood swings are expected from this point until the end of gestation.

The baby is continuing its implantation process in your uterus, burying itself deep in your endometrial lining.
Your baby helps you by secreting the human chorionic gonadotropin or HCG which helps maintain lining your uterus. It is also responsible in sending signals to your ovary to stop its releasing of eggs every month. Cramping and bleeding is normal at this time, sometimes it is mistaken for a monthly period because it usually occurs at the exact time the period is suppose to occur.

Placenta at its early stage is forming and the very beginning of the connecting stalk which will eventually become the umbilical cord – has appeared. Yolk sac will be present until placenta will be fully functioning. Maternal Blood and vascular networks are being established.

When is the right time to take a pregnancy test?

Your body is now producing enough hormones, you are now ready for a pregnancy test. A negative does not always mean that it’s nothing, sometimes hormone levels could be low that the pregnancy test and clinical test cannot find it yet. Wait for another week and try again.

Does a faint line even counts as positive?

More likely, yes. You may have been producing high amounts of HCG that the pregnancy test has detected it. To show more positive results, take the test early in the morning when the urine is most concentrated.

If you’re still not sure if the test is accurate take another test two to three days after, and if still in doubt, see a doctor for a full examination. If ever that the second test is completely negative, you may have had an early miscarriage which is unfortunately very common. However, if the second test is still positive, congratulations! A baby is on its way, which means you have to have healthier diet and avoid alcohol and smokes.
