Question: Hi. I am going through this thing with fibroids, painful especially during my period?
Bleeding, anemic, extra tired, getting frustrated easily even lil depressed at times and lack of concentration because of tiredness. I thought I was ready for this upcoming hysterectomy next month, but now I am having mixed feelings yet knowing I do not want to continue to bleed heavily, extra periods, less sex drive, large uterus size of a 6-7 pregnant woman!!!! I have not been myself in a long long time. Why do I think these fibroids will shrink and I won’t have go through surgery, but they are pretty big and do cause me problems. I had a pap smear done and it came back normal. Will I get my life back after this surgery, will my stomach go down, flatten or something? I really cant continue with this but yet getting nervous and need encouragment from someone who been through this. Please respond to my question.

I had a total vaginal hysterectomy at 29 after I had my three kids. I am very very happy with it cause like you I had severe bleeding, pain, and lack of energy. A hysterectomy is major surgery and it’s permanent sterility. If there’s any chance you want kids don’t do it. You can have a myomectomy instead which is the only procedure I’ve heard of where women can have kids after the fibroid/s are removed. Try looking on hystersisters.com as they have some great message boards. I got my life back when I had my hysterectomy and I got to keep both ovaries and tubes. There are posts that I just answered not to long that I will include in here. My paps were all normal too. If you get the fibroid removed then most likely your belly will go back down to normal. I understand the frustration of being tired, bleeding, and having anemia on top of it. I opted for the spinal and epidural for post op pain so I wouldn’t have as many side effects with other pain killers. I was pain free for 24 hours. If you have any bladder issues now is the time to see a urologist in case you need any bladder repair or other test or work done. If bladder repair is needed usually the urologist is in the o.r. with the surgeon and does it at the same time. Feel free to email me by clicking on my contact link. I won’t see your email and you won’t see mine. Hang in there and good luck.

Is it possible for women to bleed after a hysterectomy?
Yes it is possible if they keep the cervix and have endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Is there a difference in partial and total hysterectomy?
There is no such thing as a partial hysterectomy but a supracervical or subtotal where women keep the cervix is possible. Total involves removal of both the uterus and cervix regardless if they keep the ovaries or not.
